Abstract
Objective. To explore peculiarities of Ukrainian medical illnesses terms formation. Methods. theoretical and critical analysis, synthesis, system analysis, descriptive, comparative-historical method. Results. The materials of two medical reference books of XVII century are analyzed, the most distinct phonetic, spelling and lexical peculiarities of texts ware determined. The basic principles of the nomination of diseases of different organ systems are singled out. Research revealed Ukrainians` representations about the causes of the disease, the features of treatment and the relationship between symptoms and manifestations of the disease. The level of development of contemporary scientific thought is traced. The analysis of the materials made it possible to assume that the texts were brought to the territory of Ukraine from the Polish lands because Polish language had a tremendous impact on Ukrainian language at that time, and there are a lot of evidences of it, such as numerous borrowings and the simultaneous using of Cyrillic and Latin alphabets
