Abstract
This article provides an assessment of national policies the USA and Japan in the field of external assistance for sustainable development goals. In the article there have been analyzed strategic priorities and policies; organizational structure of foreign aid management; the dynamics of budget of external assistance for the sustainable development; amount of funding programs for sustainable development; quality and efficiency of foreign aid of the USA and Japan. The increase of foreign aid budgets to sustainable development goals has been identified. The priority areas in the allocation of resources to finance programs for sustainable development have been identified. Multidirectionality of trends in the financing of the basic sectors of sustainable development in developing countries by the USA and Japan has been identified. The uneven progress in improving the quality and effectiveness of official development assistance of the USA and Japan has been determined
