Abstract
The article is devoted to the theoretical research of the regional economic security category as a derivative from such definitions of region and economic security. Using the method of theoretical generalization based on the existing achievements of foreign and domestic scientists the definition of the regional economic security category has been specified. The proposed definition is supplemented by the understanding of the concept of the region as an administrative territorial unit of the regional level. In addition the concept is expanded by such categories as competitiveness and decentralization of management. As a result of the study it was determined that one of the basic features of regional economic security is the region's ability to withstand internal and external threats and therefore in further research it is expedient to study the threats to economic development at the regional level.
