Abstract

The article deals with creative writing basic skills and different types of exercises which are widespread in the process of teaching English. Activities offered by the author don’t require long preparations and are rather easy for the students to complete. Among them are «From Abstract to Concrete», «Answerless Questions», «Brainstorming», «Colour association», «Word Combinations», «Expressed Comparison», «Personification» and others. The use of such exercises gives an opportunity to combine authentic communication with students’ experience and interests. The author highlights specific principles for designing writing techniques: Incorporate practices of «good» writers; Balance process and product; Account for cultural / literary backgrounds; Connect reading and writing; Provide as much authentic writing as possible; Frame your techniques in terms of previewing, drafting, and revising stages; Strive to offer techniques that are as interactive as possible; Sensitively apply methods of responding to and correcting your students’ writing; Clearly instruct student on the rhetorical, formal conventions of writing. In conclusion the author points out that writing is an important part of language learning and should be seen as a process of exploration and chance for learners to develop their confidence and creativity in language use. Without writing practice students have difficulties in achieving their goals.
