“Slow” motion picture elements in narrative structure of A. Chekhov’s story “Steppe”

Abstract

In the article A. Chekhov‘s story „Steppe” is analyzed from motion picture poetics positions. In the analysis course such peculiaritiesof the author‘s creative thinking were revealed as synesthesia and “innate” cinematographism. A. Chekhov‘s exquisiteworkmanship in the visual portrayal of reality promoted frequent attempts of his dramaturgy filming. The method of portrayals construction in the story “Steppe” is compared with A. Tarkovskii‘s slow motion picture peculiarities, and such method use isexplained from Umberto Eco‘s point of view and his notion “speculative walk”.
