Abstract

The article deals with the problem of applying grammatical transformations in the process of translating Jack London’s novel “The Call of the Ancestors” into Ukrainian. It is proved that the main goal of a translator is to make an adequate translation. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to use translation transformations skillfully, adhering to the relevant norms of the target language, thus ensuring a more accurate rendering of information of the original text. The transformations that the target language text undergoes in comparison with the original are revealed mostly through comparative analysis. Accordingly, a comparative analysis of the application of translation transformations in the translation of a literary text, their complexity and justification is the purpose of this work. After analyzing the translations of Jack London’s novel “The Call of the Wild” made by V. Nestaiko and V. Hladka & K. Koriakina, the authors state that V. Nestaiko deviated somewhat from the norms of the original language and brought his translation closer to the norms of Ukrainian syntax, applying about 600 grammatical transformations. Thus, the translator made the text of the translation easier for Ukrainian readers to comprehend. In turn, the translation made by V. Hladka & K. Koriakina demonstrates the translators’ efforts to adhere to the norms of the original, which sometimes overloads the semantic informativeness of the narration. The authors of the article conclude that the grammatical transformations which are the most often used in the process of the novel translation are inner and outer partitioning and replacement. The least used is the transformation of compensation. But the research demonstrates that most of the transformations are of complex nature, which proves that the translation of a literary text necessitates the translator to take into account all the characteristics and peculiarities of the literary text, not limiting himself to any particular task, but to use all available tools and techniques to achieve the best translation.
