Abstract

The phenomenon of allusion is the object of interest to scholars of various sciences of linguistics, rhetoric, literary criticism, culturology, semiotics, pragmatics, etc. An analytical review of theoretical works relating to the study of the stylistic technique of allusion in the evaluation and characterization function on the material of modern English-language literary works is presented in the study. It is noted that allusion as a stylistic device is considered one of the elements of stylistic convergence, which, despite the pluralism of opinions on the definition, most scholars define as a concentration in any particular text of a number of visual and expressive means involved in the implementation of the same stylistic function. It is emphasized that in scientific literature there is no unanimity among linguists on the delineation of hypo-hyperonymic relations between these tools. It is generally accepted to understand them as expressive elements fixed in the language, a special way of text organization aimed at the most adequate reflection of the author's personal vision, figure as an expressively marked syntactic construction, and trope as an expressive technique based on the figurative use of words. It has been found that the boundaries of stylistic convergence cannot be the same in a literary text such as a single sentence or a complex syntactic whole, because the performance of one function by different techniques can be represented throughout the text. In other words, the key in determining the type of stylistic convergence (as concentrated or dispersed) is mutual location and the number of stylistic devices in its composition. The article also focuses on the distinction between "syntactic convergence" and “stylistic convergence” as a result of which stylistic convergence is interpreted as a generic concept of phonetic, syntactic and mixed convergence. It is within the syntactic convergence formed from tropes where allusion can be found. One of the main functions of this technique is to enhance the expression, ensure coherence and integrity of the text by establishing links between its parts
