Abstract
The work considers the genre of fantasy, which today is one of the most popular genres of literature. It is determined that the literary genre of fantasy belongs to the range of phenomena of mass culture of the XX century, but the question of the artistic value of fantasy literature in literary science has no final solution due to the ambiguous assessment of the phenomenon of mass literature. It is proved that the high aesthetic value and demand of fantasy literature is largely due to its focus on the use, transformation and understanding of folkloremythological image-motive complex in an attempt to create an individual author's myth.
