The article deals with the notions of “transformation“ and “lexical transformation“, defines peculiarities of their application while fiction texts translation. On the basis of comparative analysis the author investigates the problem of lexicosemantic transformations application in Ukrainian translations of the novel “The Time Machine“ by H. G. Wells, identifies their integrity and propriety. Transformation is a basis of the majority of the translation receptions involving changing formal or semantic components of a source text while preserving the information intended for transference. Lexico-semantic transformations play an important role in the process of translation, providing the text with dynamics, enhancing expressivity, serving to enhance the image-expressive functions of a language. In translation process of the novel “The Time Machine” M. Ivanov and O. Didyk applied the following types of lexico-semantic transformation: synonymous substitution, descriptive translation, contextual substitution, transcoding, antonymous translation, decompression, permutation, transposition, concretization of meaning, and generalization of meaning. Synonymous and contextual substitution are more often applied, the rare is generalization of meaning. About three hundred transformations can be found in M. Ivanov's translation, which indicates that the translator somewhat deviates from the norms of the source language in order to make the text easier for Ukrainian readers to understand and to bring it closer to the norms of the Ukrainian language. In its turn, the translation made by O. Didyk demonstrates the translator's efforts to adhere to the norms of the original and to achieve simplified translation. Summing up the carried-out analysis it’s possible to draw a conclusion that in most cases transformations are justified. For the most part, the transformations are complex: in order to achieve adequacy – the main purpose of translation – translators applied several transformations simultaneously, as it is important in the process of translation to convey not only the content but also stylistics and mood with which the work was created. For this purpose stylistic transformations are applied in complex with the lexico-semantic ones.
